Default Ex-Prodrive/McRae development car for sale

Hi all,
I have a 1999 Impreza Sport wagon dark blue for sale. First owner was Prodrive special vehicle operations, & second owner was McRae motorsport (have copy license doc). This car is a sport & not a turbo, & was thought to be a development car in response to a threat to ban turbo's from rallying. I have an old rolling road printout showing 206 bhp but think a few of those have run off now...

This is not an immaculate car & the head gasket is leaking, so sadly I am dipping my toe into the water regarding selling it, but only want it to go to an enthusiast & not stripped for spares. It has a very comprehensive service history & loads of new parts. Always starts first time & runs smoothly with loads of torque (rumbles around at 30 mph in 5th quite happily). It sounds truly wonderful with the usual impreza burble. Fitted intercooler, turbo bonnet & additional rear wing, modified heads & loads of other specialist bits including a stainless steel exhaust, walbro pump, Apexi management.

Body is a little tatty & engine previously rebuilt by Dave Coe - engine superb (apart from leaking head) & can be driven. Gearbox the best of any car I have driven & clutch fairly recent. I am a mature owner so no needless thrashing. Loads to tell about the car but don't expect an immaculate example (but only a small amount of rust at top of screen & underbody waxoyled).

I reserve the right not to sell at any price if you just intend to just strip the car, so please be nice & respect a car that Colin no doubt drove in (if just to the shops!). Can mail a load of photos to those interested but see thread below for further photos.............

Paul

Thank Rescue - would make a great project & wish I had the necessary skill/time. If I don't sell then might just throw at a car restorer & bite the cost bullet, because I love driving it

Default Inercooler

Looks like it shouldn't be called an intercooler (but thought that's what it was...). Rectangular metal airbox?

Bud, you describe the car as a sport (non turbo), yet it has an Intercooler and an Apexi boost controller.

It is a Turbocharged motor

I'm not sure it is Rob?

I can't see a dump valve and there seems like a lot of room above the exhaust manifold where the turbo would sit.

I may have to nip round and get a proper look seeing as it's very local to me.

look where the airfilter is, thats where turbo should be so doubt it has a turbo.

Very strange, he did say it was a development car so may be they were using the top mount as some sort of cold air feed.

Looks like it could possibly have an STI lump in it too.

Interesting.

Default Turbo ???

Hi guys, its definitely not a turbo! Think prodrive & others stuck all available parts they could find on it. The Apexi controller does more than potentially control boost on a turbo, you can also adjust other engine settings like idle & it monitors battery etc.
Your welcome to come around rescue (as long as you don't laugh...) I had better clean it!

Seriously, you really think Prodrive would bolt a TMIC onto an N/A car.....? Lol

.......also I really dont see any value in this car no matter who owned it previous.

I hate being on a forsale thread and see it either being slated or spamming away from the fact its a car forsale, but I think it might be wise to have a clear understanding of what the car actually has bolted on it and why and then readvertised, as I am a little confused.

It certainly looks like an Intercooler, so maybe it does cool down the temps pre manifold, but why? I have never heard of a normal aspirated car of this era having a cooler for a NA.

Also I get the Apexi do more than just boost control, but you wouldn't bother with an Apexi on a NA normally, but I guess we are talking Prodrive here, or is this post Prodrive that installed it?

I cant see any more recent pics, as works internet block Photobucket and ImgShack ;(

That's not an AVCR Rob is an SAFC which adjusts the air/fuel ratio I believe. As for the intercooler I guess it's just there for looks because it'll restrict airflow

Hi guys,
Rob - i'm inclined to agree with the need for a clear understanding of whats on it (I can do that), but why, well i'm no mechanic so difficult to answer - Paulo maybe its just for show (might try removing, it could run better!).
I put the car on here to get some feedback & I have some reluctance to sell as may only likely get peanuts, but i appreciate the input, (might turn it into a garden ornament like Clarkson did with a lightening fighter plane!).

Sorry Paul, I wasn't and I'm still not trying to pull holes in your advert, but in essence 75% of members on here are enthusiasts, or have been enthusiasts as some point, so I think most people are a little confused to why there is a TMIC on a NA engine.

I'm not suggesting that your in the same boat as some of the questionable people that have posted on here, but I have seen a whole host of odd questions in the past, such as "where do I fit a VTA on my sport?", and "why doesn't my sport have a bonnet bulge?"

I have a bit of OCD when it comes to writing adverts, especially for cars, and although my grammar is far from perfect, I do try and give a clear understanding to what it is I am selling, even if that means doing a little investigating myself.

I am currently in the market for a car, so I will pretty much look at all adverts as titles do not always state the full story, and I could miss buying a car by not clicking on the post.

You have a special car there, yes it might need TLC, but to a genuine enthusiast it could be a nice trophy, although not much is know about this "special" impreza.

thanks Rob - I think 200+ bhp from a normally aspirated impreza flat four is a big step up from what the standard 'sports' were producing in 1999 but no idea how it achieved this - I'm no engineer & feels more like 170 or so now, but still revs like a banshee... think I may get bodywork issues sorted & take back to Dave Coe for the blown head gasket - I've done 40K in the car in 3 years & has made me smile too much to let it go...

That is cool I would keep it restore it and get back those horse powers!! That is something different.

Maybe have a word with prodrive themselves they may have some answers. maybe it was put on for
Development or even put there after being at prodrive why should Mr pirikaty no this he just drives it.
