Hi, I have a 1999 classic and bought my scooby recently, it has some STi Showa pink shocks and unknown springs, and the car is very high at least 7-8 cm high at the front and 5-6 high at the rear from the top of the tyres on 17inch alloys.

The ride is extremely firm and rough and I will bounce out my seat and it will take the breath out of my voice if I drive over a slightly uneven road surface whilst talking.

The car can only be driven on smooth surfaces.

My budget is around £500 ish and I have found a set of KYB shocks and EIBACH 35mm lowering springs or H&R 50 mm lowering springs.

I use the car for commuting and no track use etc, I want something that gives a good look with the lowering but a comfortable ride as I also have a 19 month old child that I have in the car aswell.

Please advise if this is the right decision and which of the two or if any other options are open to me. I am a bit new to this so please don't make it too technical.

You'll be crashing off the bump stops with either of those spring options, not to mention ruining the handling

I fitted the Eibach setup here two weeks ago. It says in ther blurb that it is only slightly firmer than the standard setup and I can confirm that this is true. You do NOT get the spine-shattering jolts typical of a lot of coil-overs. I have a mate who is a qualified mechanical engineer who has worked on race cars and is currently working in a senior role for Nissan on suspensions. He recommended this kit and he was spot on.

It has transformed the handling of the car.

I would highly recommend it. Eibach part number is PSS65-77-001-01-22.

The showa shocks are the firmest you can get in standard fitment. They used them for drift cars and track cars. They are not great for every day usage.

Assuming you're looking at kyb excel-g's? - £250 set of 4.

I shall be ordering the latest prototype set of classic springs, for those particular struts, tomorrow.
Along with 2 further classic prototype sets, for kyb agx's, bilsteins and koni inserts.

The excel-g's are fine to certain spring rates - they're equivalent to setting 4 of 8 on the classic agx's.

The prototype springs are designed to have a closed, ground top coil, a more linear performance and coil spacing that negates the need for sheath, wrap, isolator, protector; whatever you want to call it.

I'm not sure if there's a market for these various springs, but it's keeping me and Scott.T entertained.

The ride height measured from wheel centre, vertically upward to the arch should be around 345mm

Should be around 2 weeks to on-car testing.

Eibach springs are turd, far too soft. If you dont get a set of the P1 springs out of the group buy with 2pot then look at the h&r sport springs, not the 50mm but the 35/ 30mm their ratings are closer to the prodrive blue classic springs which are perfect for uk roads

I have run brand new kyb's with the new eibachs for the past 1500 miles without any issues. Very complient on the roads they all so offer great ride quality which I think is important. All in all really pleased with the set up.
I'm only changing to coilovers because I'm doing sprints.
However I won't get as good a ride quality as I've got with the kyb's and eibachs

Out of interest, are you using excel-g or agx?
If agx, a track/road spring set is also coming with the latest prototypes.

I didn't think it would be quite this complicated. Finding a manufacturer, with correct silicon chrome wire diameters, in stock, was a nightmare.

I set the criteria. Scott.T has been fastidious with the ride heights/road testing.

It's getting the various rates to the same ride heights, with linear-ish behavior, that's proving difficult.

It doesn't help that the ratings, out there on the internet, are mostly, bollocks.
Take for instance P1's 215/195. No, 203/175. Hence, accumulating a measurable stock of various springs.

I only, originally, wanted a spring set suitable for the, 35kg heavier, wagon rear!

Mine are exel g and they've been great. Had I not stumbled across the coilovers that I did, I would be staying dampers and springs for a bit longer.
