Stormy - I see you are a fellow Reading-ite I am a total track day virgin and am thinking of doing one at some point this year in my MY05 WRX PPP. Is this the nearest venue to us? £160 seems a bit steep is that normal? How much is day insurance usually? Lastly - do you have to wear a helmet and if so, are they provided?

Lots of questions there - hope you don't mind?

Combe is one of the closer circuits to Reading and a great one too. At our trackdays (I organise them with Stormy) we run minimum cars on track at any one time and maximise your time on track. This makes it better for you and especially for novice trackday drivers.

We also use very experienced Instructors who give you the basics and teach you the best lines to take/ braking points/ etc. Before you make your way out on track we would give you a couple of sighting laps - where the instructor drives around the circuit with you as a passenger (not in your car) and explains the basics to you. Then you would get a free instructor lesson as your 1st time out on track.

As for the cost - £160 is very reasonable for a trackday in April at Castle Combe. There maybe cheaper (and definately more expensive trackdays) but then you may have to cope with up to 30 cars on the track at the same time which can feel very daunting when it's your 1st day.

Insurance can be arranged for the day. If you are covered by Keith Michaels for your regular insurance then it would be about £60 or £75, if not then Eggar Lawson can arrange cover for approx £90 to £100.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Terry

Yep certainly am

Cheers Terry

Other option if you have never driven your car on the limit or on track is to attend a driver training day, we are running one the day before Combe, some attendees are doing the training day then driving down to Combe for the track day.

Ref Price you will not get a better balance of cars, quality, instruction for the money.

Cheers for the info guys. Seems like this might be a little too much wonga for a while due to just having service, PPP and insurance all at once. You never know though! Do you have to bring your own helmet?

PS. Stormy - keep your eyes out for me in a DE55 plate Blue WRX Always up for a game if the family isn't in tow.

Jay

Thanks for your interest

You will need a helmet on the day, Helmets are available for hire on the day.

Will keep my eyes open, Funny enough Im in a blue Spec C i.e. looks like a WRX 53 Plate, however most of the time I scoot around in a white Pug 205 GTI unless Im on track or driving distance.

May see at one of the monthly Jap meetings, come and say hello

In the final stages of the 205 build(306gti engine project). It will hopefully be up and running in the next week, if the shakedown test goes ok I will be up for this.

Cheers

Hmmmm your bad news for my finances.

May be thinking of moving the 205 on later this year and going for something a little more modern.

The 306 Engine is 167 bhp isnt it, your 205 will be one rapid car eh.

Place now taken

If anyone is intrested in some more 'intensive' time with an instructor , I've booked Antony Raines for the day .

I've spent a day with Antony at Castle Coombe before and had a great time and learnt so much about driving on track .

The only problem , a day on your own a bit too intensive , sharing the day with someone would be good

So what do you get ? Well half of Antony's undivided attention for the day and at the end of it you will be driving around Castle Coombe faster than you were at the beginning of the day . Not only faster but safer , smoother and nearer the limits of the car than you would believe .

Antony is a current ARDS instructor and teaches at Thruxton among other places .He's an exellent instructor and alround nice guy too . He races in the 750 Formula in these little beasties , they lap Brands Hatch Indy in 54-55 seconds .......

This was at Brands Hatch in 2006 , he's in the number 12 car and yes he did win....

Cost... He's £200 for the day so £100 each , believe me this is a bargin

Martin .
