Are they really needed or can i bin them? The fronts on my MY99 uk turbo are rusted beyond repair and im changing to 2 pots on the rear
Ive seen a few threads about them but i havent seen a definitive answer from anyone in the know

Are they not there incase the cv gator splits and coats the disk in grease?

Yes you can remove them , we have never had an issue doing so

If you are changing to 2 pot rear with 290mm discs you'll have to take them off.

The disc will foul on it

I knew i had to modify them to get them to fit but i didnt know i had to remove them. Thanks for the heads up

If you fit the rear 2 pots you can get away with bending the stone guard in on the outer edge to clear the discs , when fitting the brembo rears you do have to remove it.

Its simple enough to take it off which is what we do

The backs are more work to get them off , but still easy , the fronts are only held on with 3 bolts , the rears are spot welded on , you can either drill through the spot welds with a proper spot weld drill , or just grind through the welds taking care not to cut into the backplate , all your looking to do is remove the stone guard , the backplate obviously stays in place , once you got the discs off its all clear to see what needs doing.

Just don't manhandle the backplate too much because its quite easy to bend them , and then the disc will rub on it going round corners , there is a lip on the backplate that fits into a groove on the discs to stop any crap getting into the handbrake mechanism , and its easy to bend it so this lip rubs on the disc

Just take your time and go easy on it , and it will come off easy enough
