View Full Version : Corroding Discs and lack of feel

Got MY06 WRX, previously had a Bugeye WRX, both seem to suffer from corrosion on the discs. It seems to be on the gap in between the discs. Car has been garaged everynight for over a year now.

Anyone else got the same ?

Also, the brakes are cr@p. Absolutely no feel to them. Seem to have to press the pedal, release and press again. Had 30000 about 1 month back which should have done brake fluid but still the same

Any thoughts ?

All brake discs will corrode, its just a mixture of cold/wet/damp air/salt water/brake dust etc

With regards to your brakes and no feel, try fitting a set of braided lines

My 55 plate WRX has badly corroded discs too. They seem to work OK, but can be noisy until I've done a few stops to clean them up.

I'm looking into uprated discs to improve the braking but my insurance only allows 5 mods (which I've already done) and need to see whether better brakes class as a mod.

You can buy OE quality discs for under £50 a pair, so I might have to do this soon (1st MoT fast approaching!) as a temporary measure.

My MOT is due next April so will get them changed before then. I'd like to upgrade the brakes so they at least feel like they braking. My wife's A4 have considerably better feel.

Can't really justify a grand or so on the brakes though.

Any reasonable options out there ?

I don't think you have to spend a grand to see some improvement.

Even on std discs, I've been told that a set of good pads will give more feel and stopping power.

Pagid Blues (around £125) seem to get the most votes, but the cheaper Mintex are also good but dusty. I've heard a lot of good things about Performance Friction pads too, but not sure if they're available for a WRX nor the cost.

If you uprate the discs, the choices are endless: Grooved, drilled, grooved and drilled. All can be had for £60 upwards.

I have just gone back to oem discs and Pagid Blue pads on my 03 WRX and atm i am very happy. I am getting some squeeling which is under light braking, say when stuck in traffic, etc, but so far i am impressed.
I have come from a stoptech kit that i didnt want to spend anymore money on as well. All i need to do now is go out and cane them! LOL.

where did you get the OEM discs from ?

All my work gets done by RCM, so the discs were supplied/bought from them.
I used my own oem calipers as when they were removed back in 2004 i just lobbed them in my garage, lol. Previously i had stoptech kit on which is now in the garage instead :)

Braided hoses don't help unless you are on a track and the fluid gets really hot. On the road under normal driving you won't notice a difference. I changed to DOT 5.1 fluid and braided hoses and I saw no difference under normal driving. A set of good pads as suggested is the mose efficient modification. The brakes work ok but need getting used to and quite some pressure on the pedal. They may need bleeding if you have to press, let go and press again.

I noticed a bit of difference with braided lines - but after about two days you just wouldn't notice.
